Instructions for mixing egg tempera paint from a ready-made mixture of by jord.

You can mix the dry mix färg i påse in your kitchen using the kitchen appliances you already have. It is important to clean the appliances immediately after use so that no paint residue sticks. The easiest way to mix the paint is with a stirring rod. However, you can also mix the ingredients without any tools. The ingredients can be weighed very well using kitchen scales.

coverage

One colour mix (färg i påse / grundfärg i påse) produces approximately one litre of finished paint. While the coverage of the primer is on average 10 square metres, the colour mix covers approximately 10 square metres in total, consisting of 2 coats. Or in other words 15 square metres with the first coat of paint on a primed surface and 25 square metres with the second coat.

production of the pigment paste

Pour 500 ml of water into a container suitable for a blender or into a suitable container with a tight-fitting lid. Then pour the entire contents of the färg i påse (paint in a bag) into the container with water. Close the container and leave it to stand for at least an hour. You will get a more homogeneous consistency if the pigment mixture is allowed to slurry overnight. Stir the pigment paste well before mixing it with the egg-oil mixture.

Preparation of the egg-linseed oil mixture

Use a container suitable for a mixer. Place it on the scales and set them to 0 (tare). Mix equal parts eggs and linseed oil. Use the quantities indicated on the respective bag as a guide. Only open as many eggs as are stated on the packaging of the color mixture (grams). An egg weighs between 50-70 g. Always use fresh and whole eggs. Weighing the exact amount of egg is often a little difficult. Deviations of up to 5 g are not a problem. It is important that you add the same amount of linseed oil (in grams). Stir/mix the mixture for approx. 1-2 minutes until you have produced a homogeneous egg-oil mixture.

The painting can begin!

Remember that egg tempera should be used on the same day it is made, if possible. If you haven't used up all the paint, store the egg tempera in a closed jar with a lid in the refrigerator until the next day. Never use egg tempera paint that has even the slightest smell after it has been mixed!

The pure pigment paste has a shelf life of up to 12 months. Store the paste in a clean and tightly closed jar. However, this only applies as long as you have not added any egg-oil mixture. You can store the egg-oil mixture in the refrigerator in a container with a lid for a week.
